The activity focused on enhancing students’ English conversation skills, confidence in English communication, and international cultural awareness. Designed for students from the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology who would participate in an internship program in the United States during the summer, the activity consisted of a series of full-English conversation and cultural courses. Topics included American culture and etiquette, dining culture and table manners, classroom culture and questioning techniques, as well as professional terminology in audiology and speech-language pathology. The courses aimed to help students gradually transition from everyday English communication to the professional English skills required for overseas internships, thereby enhancing their ability to use English and adapt to cross-cultural environments.
The activity consisted of an 8-week full-English course, incorporating lectures, situational practice, group discussions, role-playing, and professional English practice to provide students with opportunities to use English in practical communication contexts. Beginning with everyday situations, the course included practical activities such as greeting strangers, handshakes and hugs, ordering food at restaurants, table manners, and asking questions in the classroom. It further introduced professional terminology related to audiology and speech-language pathology, helping students gradually develop the English communication skills required for their overseas internships.
After completing the course, students generally reported that the course content was practical and engaging. The activity not only enhanced their understanding of cultural differences and international etiquette between Taiwan and the United States, but also increased their willingness and confidence to speak English. In addition, the course helped students better prepare for the linguistic and cultural environment they would encounter during their internships in the United States.
