EMI Teaching Experience Seminar: Practical Development in Laboratory Medi-cine with Professor Pei-Cheng Lin
We invited Professor Pei-Cheng Lin to share his philosophy and practical experience in EMI course design. Drawing on his own teaching practice, he demonstrated how English-medium instruction can be effectively integrated with disciplinary knowledge to create an engaging and student-centered learning environment. Professor Lin emphasized that EMI is not merely about improving English proficiency; rather, it serves as a platform for cultivating students' professional competencies, international communication skills, and lifelong learning mindset. By adopting learner-centered pedagogical approaches, he encouraged instructors to reduce students' anxiety toward both English and EMI courses while enhancing their motivation and willingness to actively participate in class.
Professor Lin introduced his EMI course as a highly interactive, participation-oriented learning experience that employs diverse assessment methods instead of traditional written examinations. Through class discussions, collaborative activities, and authentic professional exchanges, students are encouraged to engage actively in the learning process. The course also emphasizes the connection between academic learning, future career development, and continuous professional growth after graduation, fostering the concept of lifelong learning. Furthermore, Professor Lin shared that student enrollment has steadily increased over the years, reflecting growing confidence in and acceptance of EMI courses. He also referenced a discussion about the starting salaries of graduates from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to illustrate the value of English proficiency and global competitiveness. Concluding the seminar, he reassured participating faculty with three key messages: no need to worry about students' English proficiency, no need to worry about EMI delivery, and no need to worry about class attendance. His presentation encouraged instructors to embrace EMI teaching with confidence while creating an inclusive, enjoyable, and supportive learning environment.
