【EMI教師增能講座】美國學術交流基金會(Fulbright) -EMI課堂可理解度與跨文化溝通實務講座

一、活動重點及目的:
本次講座邀請 美國學術交流基金會(Fulbright Program) Mary 顧問,以「“Did You Catch That?”

This lecture featured consultant Mary from the Fulbright Program, who delivered a session entitled “Did You Catch That? Intelligibility in EMI Classrooms and Intercultural Communication.” The lecture explored key factors influencing language comprehension and communication effectiveness in EMI contexts. The speaker first introduced the importance of both segmentals and supersegmentals in speech and their respective impacts on the clarity of English communication. She emphasized that the core of EMI teaching lies not merely in teachers’ English proficiency or how closely their pronunciation resembles that of native speakers, but rather in their ability to enhance intelligibility through appropriate speech features and pedagogical strategies, ensuring that students can effectively receive, understand, and engage with course content. The session also introduced digital tools, such as YouGlish, that can help instructors improve English pronunciation and classroom delivery. By utilizing authentic language examples, these tools support teachers in strengthening instructional quality and intercultural communication competence, thereby fostering a more inclusive and effective EMI learning environment.

This activity integrated theoretical foundations, case analysis, and hands-on practice to enhance participants’ understanding and application of communication strategies in EMI teaching. The session included video observations and discussions analyzing how different English accents, speech rates, intonation, thought groups, and body language influence intelligibility, encouraging participants to reflect on potential communication challenges within their own teaching contexts. Through comparisons of real-life examples, the speaker demonstrated that even when grammar and pronunciation are accurate, inadequate pacing or insufficient instructional support may still reduce students’ comprehension and learning effectiveness. In addition, the lecture introduced an interactive teaching activity, “That's How You Roll It,” in which participants create six questions or discussion topics and use a dice to randomly select them. This activity serves as a practical teaching strategy for promoting oral expression and classroom interaction in EMI courses. Overall, the session was highly practical and participatory, providing valuable insights that can help instructors incorporate concepts of intercultural communication and intelligibility into EMI teaching practices.
