【EMI教師增能演講】校內教師ESP課程教學經驗分享「Motivating students in ESP teaching」

一、活動重點及目的: 
本次講座由中山醫學大學醫學檢驗暨生物技術學系林培正教授主講,聚焦於如何在ESP/EMI課程中提升學生學習動機與實際溝通能力。講者強調語言學習的核心在於「溝通」,教師與學生皆無須追求完美語音或詞彙,而應以傳達訊息為主要目標,並透過聲音、肢體與情境輔助理解,以降低學生或教師本身對英語使用及國際場合的焦慮感。此外,講座引導教師思考教與學的目標設定,鼓勵學生培養自我覺察與內在動機,主動尋找學習資源並積極參與課堂活動。針對醫學檢驗專業英語,亦強調聽力理解與書寫能力的重要性,並結合文化理解與國際溝通能力培養,期望協助學生建立面對國際學術與專業場域之信心與能力。

This lecture was delivered by Professor Lin Pei-Cheng from the Department of Medical Laboratory Science and Biotechnology at Chung Shan Medical University. The session focused on how to enhance students’ learning motivation and practical communication skills in ESP/EMI courses. The speaker emphasized that the core of language learning lies in “communication.” Both teachers and students do not need to pursue perfect pronunciation or vocabulary; instead, the primary goal should be to convey meaning effectively. Communication can also be supported through sounds, gestures, and contextual cues, thereby reducing anxiety for both students and teachers when using English or participating in international settings. In addition, the lecture encouraged teachers to reflect on teaching and learning goals, while guiding students to develop self-awareness and intrinsic motivation, actively seek learning resources, and engage in classroom activities. With regard to professional English in medical laboratory science, the speaker highlighted the importance of listening comprehension and writing skills, integrating cultural understanding and international communication competence to help students build confidence in global academic and professional contexts.

 

二、活動特色及執行情形: 
本次講座內容兼具理論與實務,提供具體可行的教學策略與課堂操作方式。講者建議教師建立明確且透明的課程架構,重視出席率與師生互動,透過眼神交流與鼓勵發言,營造支持性學習環境。同時,課程設計可融入多元任務導向活動,如每週任務(weekly mission)、一分鐘即時表達、三分鐘簡報、電子郵件寫作等,強化學生實際應用英語之能力。此外,也鼓勵將「學習的樂趣」融入教學,例如透過電影欣賞、與外籍人士交流或遊戲式學習,提高學生參與度;講座中亦介紹多元數位資源,如Audible與Radio Garden等平台,協助教師豐富教學內容。整體而言,本次活動有效提供教師在ESP教學中激發學生動機之策略,並促進課堂互動與實務應用之提升。

The lecture combined both theoretical perspectives and practical approaches, offering concrete and applicable teaching strategies. The speaker suggested that teachers establish clear and transparent course structures, emphasize attendance, and foster teacher-student interaction through eye contact and encouragement to speak, thereby creating a supportive learning environment. Course design can incorporate various task-based activities, such as weekly missions, one-minute impromptu speaking, three-minute presentations, and email writing exercises, to strengthen students’ ability to use English in real contexts. Furthermore, the integration of enjoyment into learning was encouraged, for example through watching movies, interacting with foreign partners, or learning through games, to increase student engagement. The lecture also introduced a variety of digital resources, such as Audible and Radio Garden, to enrich teaching materials. Overall, this lecture effectively provided strategies for motivating students in ESP teaching and enhancing both classroom interaction and practical application.
